My curiosity about the Swedish abstract artist Hilma af Klint, born in 1862, who kept her revolutionary work a secret during her lifetime, has resulted in several paintings which honour her mystical style influenced by geometry, botany, science, spirituality, theosophy and the supernatural. These influences can be seen in her series of enormous paintings, The Ten Largest, exhibited for a short while in the Art Gallery of NSW in 2021, and in my paintings, I hear you Hilma (I) and (III), you can see I have reproduced many of the colours and elements from that same series as a backdrop to these two still lifes and as an homage to the trailblazing work of Hilma af Klint. It's easy to see why her spiritual guide said the language of her abstract paintings would be met with incomprehension and why she specified they be kept secret for at least 20 years after her death.
